The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), has  announced  Residents will no longer be able to obtain free underground water, as digital water meters will be put to track usage.

A notification that goes into effect on August 1 states that these meters would track how much subterranean water Karachi residents and businesses use.Corporations, commercial enterprises, water bottling and packaging industries, educational institutions, lodging and dining establishments, and manufacturing and processing facilities would all be covered by the new system.

Although individual residential residences won’t be impacted, societies, residential complexes, apartments, and flats will all be included. Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the mayor of Karachi, said that the project is anticipated to bring in Rs. 1 billion a year in revenue. He emphasized that 450 million gallons of water, valued at Rs. 4.5 billion, are supplied to Karachi.

Wahab also discussed the city’s efforts to control the activities of water tankers, pointing out that 3,200 of the 5,500 water tankers have been registered in order to avoid water theft, and the remaining 2,300 are slated to be registered soon
