Islamabad, Apr 15, 2025: In a significant step towards promoting girls’ education, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has introduced free transport facilities for female students, especially in far-flung regions.
This forward-thinking program is designed to tackle one of the major challenges that hinder girls from attending school — the lack of safe and affordable transportation.
Districts to Benefit from the Scheme
As per the KP Education Department, this scheme will initially target the most isolated and underserved districts of the province.
Areas including Kohistan, Torghar, Hangu, and Lakki Marwat are among the first to receive this benefit. Other districts such as Dera Ismail Khan, Charsadda, Kohat, and Bannu are also on the list, widening the program’s reach.
By offering no-cost travel options, the initiative intends to significantly reduce the dropout rate among school-going girls.
Education officers in each district have been instructed to ensure smooth implementation, ensuring that transport issues no longer prevent girls from pursuing their academic goals.
This move is expected to foster a more inclusive and equitable education system across KP.

Similar Measures in Punjab
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has also taken proactive steps to improve student mobility.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the provincial cabinet has approved a student travel card scheme that will allow pupils to access public transit systems at no charge.
In addition to students, the plan also covers elderly citizens and individuals with disabilities, reflecting a broader commitment to accessibility.
The government is also evaluating proposals to launch a tram service, which could further modernize and expand the public transport network across the province.
A Step Toward Educational Equity
These transportation-focused initiatives are more than just convenience measures — they are a vital investment in women’s empowerment and equal opportunity.
By removing logistical barriers, both KP and Punjab governments are taking practical steps to ensure that every child, regardless of gender or location, has access to quality education.
