Islamabad, Feb 17: Former Pakistan cricket star Mohammad Yousuf has shared his insights on the favorites for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. He considers New Zealand and India as the most well-rounded teams in the tournament but believes that Pakistan’s home advantage could be a decisive factor in their success.
While Yousuf did not single out one team as the outright favorite, he expressed admiration for New Zealand’s squad composition and their adaptability to subcontinental conditions. “It’s a major event where momentum is key. In my view, New Zealand has the most balanced squad. They have a solid batting lineup, three high-quality fast bowlers, and reliable spinners. Their wicketkeeper is an all-rounder, and they also possess two spin-bowling all-rounders, making them a well-equipped side,” Yousuf remarked.
He also highlighted India’s depth in talent, calling them another formidable contender. With India set to play all their matches in the UAE, Yousuf believes their familiarity with these conditions could work in their favor as the tournament progresses.
Despite acknowledging the strengths of New Zealand and India, Yousuf stressed that Pakistan’s home conditions provide them with a significant advantage. “Playing on home soil gives Pakistan an upper hand, but they must play smart and calculated cricket to capitalize on this opportunity,” he advised.
Offering guidance to the Pakistan squad, Yousuf pointed out their recent struggles against spin, especially in the tri-series final loss to New Zealand. He emphasized the need for better strike rotation and reducing dot balls in the middle overs. “We have been playing on turning tracks, so it’s crucial to find gaps against spinners and keep the scoreboard ticking. With five fielders inside the circle, there are always scoring opportunities,” he explained.
