Islamabad, Aug 26: a potent new monsoon system is expected to arrive in Pakistan today and bring with it torrential rainfall to Punjab and Sindh through August 29.
In addition to thunderstorms, there will likely be a lot of rainfall throughout Sindh, particularly in Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Islamkot, Mithi, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Matiari, Sanghar, and Sukkur.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reports that strong gusts, sporadic showers, and maybe severe thunderstorms are possible in Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Naushahro Feroze.
Heavy rains in Southeast Sindh have the potential to create road closures, disturb everyday life, damage to vulnerable infrastructure such mud houses, walls, electric poles, billboards, cars, and solar panels, and even cause flooding in low-lying areas.
Due to the probability of choppy conditions, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has also advised fisherman not to go out into the sea between August 27 and August 30. Mayor Murtaza Wahab has ordered municipal services to be on high alert, and Karachi has declared a state of emergency and cancelled all municipal staff leaves in preparation of the severe rainfall.
A new notice has been released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) for further monsoon rainfall in Punjab starting today. There is a chance of flooding in the D.G. Khan, Multan, and Bahawalpur divisions. Severe rains are anticipated in Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Mianwali, Sargodha, Jhelum, Sialkot, Narowal, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rahim Yar Khan.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department said that rain is also anticipated in other areas, such as Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Balakot, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Kohat, Orakzai, Hangu, Waziristan, and Kurram, though at different intensities.
There may be thunderstorms and rain in several areas of Balochistan, including Barkhan, Musakhail, Loralai, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Nasirabad, Jafarabad, Lasbela, Khuzdar, and the adjacent districts. The weather in Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan is predicted to be partly cloudy, with isolated chances of rain and thunderstorms.
