Islamabad, Aug 28: Tuesday’s monsoon rains continued across the province; breaking Multan’s 48-year-old record of 134.5 mm established in 1976 with the city’s biggest downpour of 172 mm.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) released a new advisory on Tuesday, alerting people to the possibility that the current rains, with particularly strong downpours in the country’s central and southern regions, may continue throughout the week.
Southern Punjab was also hit by a lot of rain, which caused widespread flooding there. The Chungi No. 9 Disposal Station region of Multan saw the most rainfall, at 172 mm, breaking the previous record set by the city in 1976 of 134.5 mm.There was 90mm of rain on Old Shujabad Road and 137mm on Kerri Jammandan.
The intense downpour caused streets and roads to flood, posing serious problems for locals.
Khalid Raza Khan, the managing director of Multan Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), issued a rain emergency proclamation and directed field employees from the disposal station and sewage divisions to begin water drainage operations throughout the city. He personally oversaw the drainage works and gave the order for all disposal stations to operate at maximum capacity.
The maximum rainfall, 51 mm, was reported in Attock, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). Jhelum, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Bhakkar, Shorkot, and Murree followed with 46 mm, 42 mm, 32 mm, and 31 mm, respectively.
