Islamabad, Dec 27: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced that obtaining a National Identity Card (NIC) is now mandatory for all Pakistani citizens upon reaching the age of 18.

Under Section 9(1) of the NADRA Ordinance 2000, citizens must apply for their NIC within 90 days of turning 18. Non-compliance with this regulation could result in significant penalties, including:

  • Imprisonment: Up to six months
  • Fine: Up to Rs. 50,000
  • Both penalties combined

These consequences are outlined in Section 30(e) of the NADRA Ordinance.This directive aims to ensure accurate and comprehensive citizen registration while streamlining the management of national records. NADRA’s initiative underscores the importance of fulfilling this legal obligation promptly to maintain compliance and avoid severe penalties.

NADRA has urged young citizens and their families to prioritize obtaining an NIC upon reaching adulthood. Submitting applications on time will not only help avoid legal repercussions but also contribute to the efficient governance of national records.
