Islamabad, Oct 18: Central Power Generation Company Limited (CPGCL) has been fined Rs. 50 million by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for making misleading submissions that affected end-user electricity pricing.

A national daily revealed that CPGCL’s Guddu Thermal Power Station received a gas booster from Engro Corporation at no cost yet charged over Rs. 1.24 billion in tariffs without providing the full data.

NEPRA discovered that CPGCL had received a gas booster compressor station (GBCS) at free cost from Engro, but had failed to reveal this information.

The regulator found that this was not approved by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), and that no legitimate documentation was submitted, even though CPGCL claimed to have the consent of the ECC.

The National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) and the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) have also received show-cause notices from NEPRA for breaking the rules after signing operating procedures and black-start agreements with several power producers in the wake of the January 2021 nationwide blackout. For these infractions, these organizations can be fined Rs. 200 million.
