Islamabad, Feb 6: In a historic development, Sunrisers Hyderabad, an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, has made waves in the cricketing world by becoming the first entity to fully own an English cricket team. The franchise has acquired 100% ownership of the Northern Superchargers for £100 million, marking a pivotal moment in the sport’s evolution. This move highlights the growing global expansion and financial integration of cricket, setting a new standard in cross-border investments.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s parent company, the Sun Group, has now fully taken over the Leeds-based Northern Superchargers, making them the first-ever entity to hold complete ownership in The Hundred competition. Previously, IPL franchises made partial investments, but this full acquisition sets a groundbreaking precedent.
The Northern Superchargers, hosted by the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, align themselves with this acquisition as a strategic move aimed at ensuring long-term financial stability. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also supports this trend, promoting investments to drive substantial revenue from the sale of stakes in domestic teams.

This acquisition is particularly crucial for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which has faced financial difficulties, including a £15 million debt owed to a trust led by chairman Colin Graves. The deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad is expected to provide a much-needed financial boost, aiding in debt alleviation while securing the future of the Northern Superchargers.
The move by Sunrisers Hyderabad is part of a larger trend where IPL franchises are increasingly investing in teams in The Hundred. Other notable investments include the Ambani family, who purchased a 49% stake in the Oval Invincibles through Reliance Industries, and the RPSG Group, owners of Lucknow Super Giants, who have acquired a significant stake in the Manchester Originals.
The updated list of The Hundred’s new team owners includes:
- London Spirit: Consortium (Google, Microsoft, Adobe) – 49% stake, £145 million investment
- Oval Invincibles: Ambani Family – 49% stake, £60 million investment
- Birmingham Phoenix: Knighthead Capital – 49% stake, £40 million investment
- Manchester Originals: RPSG Group – 70% stake, £81 million investment
- Welsh Fire: Sanjay Govil (Washington Freedom) – 49% stake, £40 million investment
- Northern Superchargers: Sunrisers Hyderabad – 100% stake, £100 million investment
This growing involvement of IPL franchises in The Hundred demonstrates the increasing globalization of cricket and the expanding role of financial powerhouses in the sport’s future.
