Islamabad, 24, Apr, 2025: In the wake of the Pahalgam Attack, Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) convened an urgent session on Thursday to assess India’s recent aggressive measures and formulate a coordinated diplomatic and strategic response.
The attack, which occurred in the scenic town of Pahalgam in India-administered Kashmir, left at least 26 civilians dead, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the region in over two decades.
The NSC, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is evaluating what it described as “hasty and provocative actions” by India, including the unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty a longstanding agreement facilitated by the World Bank in 1960 to manage water sharing between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The committee aims to develop a comprehensive policy framework in light of escalating tensions.

India, attributing the Pahalgam Attack to alleged cross-border terrorism, has taken a series of punitive steps: halting trade and passenger movement across the Attari border, downgrading diplomatic relations, and restricting access to Pakistan’s official X (formerly Twitter) account within Indian territory.
The government also declared a Pakistani envoy persona non grata, further straining India Pakistan ties.
Islamabad has strongly rejected the accusations, calling the event a “false flag operation,” and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
State media quoted officials saying the NSC would examine both the “internal and external challenges” arising from the Pahalgam incident and determine a proportionate reaction.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has meanwhile convened an all-party meeting to brief opposition leaders on the government’s course of action, underlining the seriousness of the situation.
