Islamabad, Dec 19: Pakistan has inaugurated its first-ever genetic molecular laboratory, marking a significant step forward in medical diagnostics. This state-of-the-art facility, established in collaboration with the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA), is located at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) in Karachi. The lab will specialize in diagnosing physical and mental disabilities in premature infants and identifying genetic disorders in children and adults.

The launch event, held at the Karachi Press Club, was attended by several prominent figures, including APPNA President Dr. Asif Mohiuddin, General Secretary Dr. Rizwan Naeem, JSMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, and Dow University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Saeed Qureshi.

Dr. Mohiuddin emphasized the lab’s crucial role in diagnosing genetic disorders and health conditions, particularly in premature infants. He described the lab as a milestone in modernizing medical diagnostics in Pakistan, with the potential to predict future health issues, allowing for early intervention.

Prof. Memon further highlighted the lab’s cutting-edge technology, which enables early detection of genetic defects. The lab is equipped to determine a child’s genetic makeup and even identify their gender through fluid extraction from the mother’s womb. This breakthrough facility is expected to be a valuable resource for early medical intervention and improving healthcare outcomes in Pakistan.
