Islamabad, Dec 16: Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Atta Ullah Tarar, called for the establishment of an ethical framework on Friday to ensure the “fair and sustainable” use of artificial intelligence (AI) and mitigate the risks associated with disinformation.
During the fourth International Strategic Communication Forum in Istanbul, Tarar participated in a panel discussion titled “AI in National Strategy: Governmental Perspectives on Digital Transformation and Strategic Communication.” He highlighted the dual nature of AI, acknowledging its opportunities while addressing potential misuse.
“AI must be integrated in a way that upholds truth, promotes social justice, aligns with ethical principles, and serves as an effective tool against disinformation,” Tarar stated. He also pointed out AI’s role in spreading false narratives, citing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza as an example. He stressed the importance of prioritizing efforts to counter misinformation as investment in AI expands.
Digital Pakistan Vision
Tarar outlined the Digital Pakistan Vision, which seeks to transition the country into a knowledge-based economy. He announced plans to train one million students in AI tools by 2025, preparing them to leverage emerging technologies effectively.
He also discussed the Pakistan Digital Dialogue initiative, which utilizes generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to create citizen-focused communication strategies.
The Stratcom Summit’24, held under the theme “AI in Communication: Trends, Traps, and Transition,” brought together global leaders and experts to explore AI’s transformative impact on communication.
