Islamabad, Sep 23: Barrister Aqeel Malik, the Prime Minister’s legal and justice advisor, stated on Monday that the 26th Constitutional Amendment’s historic move was making climate change a constitutional right. He also stated, in an interview with a private news program, that the 26th Amendment will be vital to bolstering the legal system.

He declared, “This parliament will be the first in the world to grant constitutional recognition to climate change.” He went on to say that the amendment has received unwarranted criticism because its actual intent has been misrepresented and its true meaning has been misunderstood.

He stated that since March and April, work on the 26th Amendment has been ongoing.
He said that in order to guarantee wide consensus, multiple discussions with coalition partners and the ministers of law and information were held.In answer to a query, he stated that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had asked for more time to guarantee widespread consultation, and that request had been granted.

A final decision on the age-related provisions is anticipated following feedback from the legal community and other stakeholders, according to him, who is now conducting consultations on the matter.

“This strategy was appropriate because it will provide all parties involved an opportunity to offer their opinions. After coming to an agreement with the opposition, we want to introduce the change during the first week of October,” he added.
