Islamabad, Aug 25: The assistance of railway police and train workers, Pakistan Railways has conducted a crackdown on ticketless passengers during the last seven months, collecting a total of Rs.79.2 million.

According to Ministry officials who spoke to media, “about 61,352 passengers were found traveling without tickets in various trains and the said amount was collected from them, which is deposited in the official bank account of the department.” They added that such crackdowns had been happening on a regular basis and that Pakistan Railways had not been the first to carry out a large-scale operation against people traveling without tickets.

According to the sources, traveling without a ticket was prohibited, and those found in violation of the law had to pay the full cost of a ticket for the duration of the train ride in addition to a fine.The railway police get hold of those who refuse to pay. In response to a query, they stated that, in the course of 1.5 years, Pakistan Railways Police claimed to have recorded roughly 3,803 cases against suspected individuals in eight Railways divisions and to have arrested 43,84 people overall for allegedly breaking norms and laws.

“The Peshawar Division had about 688 cases, Rawalpindi had 584, Lahore had 11,03, Mughalpura workshops had 369, Multan had 378, Sukkur had 238, Karachi had 365, and Quetta Division had 78 cases,” they continued.They claimed that all of the nation’s major train stations now had Railways Police Help Desks, and that the Police had performed admirably during the previous 12 months.

“Police are performing duties efficiently despite the limited resources,” they stated in reference to the railway police’s performance, adding that “the performance of the railway police will be further improved to the optimum level during the next year.”
