Islamabad, Sep 2: In Rawalpindi, Pakistan is about to introduce its first totally digital transportation system. The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) would supervise the development of the required software for this new public transportation initiative, according to a national daily that cited sources.
The Pirwadhai Bus Terminal will get an e-tag system and a control room installed as part of the plan. Comprehensive car data, including registration details, ownership details, vehicle color, fitness certifications, driver’s licenses, route numbers, and tracking information, will be collected by this system at the terminal.
Only vehicles that meet safety and service criteria will be allowed to exit the terminal; this will be monitored by the control room as vehicles enter and exit. This computerized system is the first of its kind in Pakistan and, if successful, might be expanded to other Punjabi cities. It is modeled after similar projects in Paris, London, and the United States.
Through the system, anyone will be able to file complaints online about government and public transportation services. The Regional transit Authority (RTA) Secretary, Rashid Ali, hailed the digital transit initiative in Rawalpindi as a noteworthy development.He said that the Punjab government had offered IT support and that, in order to complete the project, senior representatives from the transportation and IT sectors would be visiting Rawalpindi on September 2.
