Islamabad, Aug 15: The overall debt stock of the federal government, which includes both external and domestic debt, increased by 1.6% in June 2024 over May 2024.

The federal government’s total domestic and external debt stocks increased by Rs1.098 trillion to Rs68.914 trillion at the end of June 2024 from Rs67.816 trillion at the end of May 2024, according to a report released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Thursday. A thorough examination showed that the short-term domestic debt of the central government had significantly increased.

The external debt of the central government increased from Rs21.608 trillion in May 2024 to Rs21.754 trillion in June 2024, a 0.7% increase or Rs146 billion. In the meantime, the total domestic debt of the central government increased to Rs47.16 trillion in June 2024 from Rs46,208 trillion in May 2024, a 2.1% rise or Rs952 billion.

The long-term domestic debt of the central government rose by 0.6% from Rs36.599 trillion in May 2024 to Rs36.828 trillion in June 2024. However, the short-term internal debt of the government increased significantly, reaching Rs10.248 trillion in June. On the other hand, June’s total liabilities in the Naya Pakistan Certificates (NPC) dropped by 3.1% to Rs84 billion.
