Islamabad, Mar 11, 2025: Pakistan has taken a significant leap toward digital innovation with the introduction of its first dematerialized electronic identity card.
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) unveiled this groundbreaking initiative as part of its 25th-anniversary celebrations.
The newly launched digital ID will be integrated into the Pak ID mobile application, allowing citizens to securely store their identification on their smartphones.
Additionally, a robust digital verification system is under development to ensure seamless and instant authentication across various services.
The pilot phase of this initiative is scheduled to commence on Independence Day 2025, under the World Bank-supported Digital Economy Project.
A special event at NADRA’s headquarters marked the official launch, attended by prominent officials, including its founding Chairman, Major General (Retd.) Zahid Ehsan.
Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi lauded the initiative, describing it as a transformative step in identity management and digital security.
To honor NADRA’s 25-year legacy, the State Bank of Pakistan issued a commemorative coin, while Pakistan Post introduced a special postage stamp

Officials highlighted NADRA’s pivotal role in extending identity services to remote regions and supporting law enforcement agencies in national security efforts.
Citizens were also urged to update official records by canceling the identity cards of deceased family members to maintain an accurate national database.
This initiative marks a crucial advancement in Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, promising enhanced security, efficiency, and accessibility for citizens nationwide.
