ISLAMABAD:
Federal Minister for Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, Musadik Malik, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to tackling global water challenges. He emphasized the need for glacier preservation and climate-resilient policies. His statement, released on World Water Day, aligns with this year’s theme: “Glacier Preservation.”
Malik highlighted the crucial role of glaciers in maintaining Earth’s climate and freshwater supply. He stressed that Pakistan, home to one of the world’s largest glacial systems, must act urgently to protect these natural water sources. His message also reinforced Pakistan’s dedication to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which promotes universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.
World Water Day, observed every year on March 22, raises awareness about the ongoing global water crisis. Currently, 2.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. Since its launch in 1993, this initiative has played a key role in advocating for sustainable water management.
“Glaciers are essential to our survival. Protecting them is not just an environmental need but a necessity for future generations,” said Malik. “Pakistan recognizes the urgency of shielding these natural water reservoirs from climate change.”
Pakistan has launched several climate-focused initiatives, including:
-
The Living Indus Basin Restoration Plan, developed with the United Nations, aims to restore and protect critical water ecosystems.
-
The Green Pakistan Upscaling Programme focuses on expanding forest cover and minimizing climate risks.
-
Updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement outline Pakistan’s strategy for climate resilience.
Malik called for global cooperation to combat climate change. He stressed that protecting glaciers and securing water resources requires urgent, coordinated action.
