Islamabad, Dec 22: The Prime Minister has established an eight-member committee to review the taxation system for the Newly Merged Districts (NMDs), also known as FATA.

As per the official letter, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), following a recommendation from the PM office, has formed the committee under the leadership of Rana Sana Ullah Khan, Federal Minister for IPC and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs regarding the taxation framework for the Newly Merged Districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

The committee members include Amir Muqam, Minister of State for Finance & Revenue, the Chairman of FBR, the Chief Secretary of KP, representatives from the Pakistan Association of Large Steel Producers, the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA), and Zahidullah Shinwari, former President of KPCCI.

The committee’s terms of reference (TORs) include strategizing the implementation of the recommendations from the Steering Committee’s report on the Prime Minister’s Programme for Newly Merged Districts, formed on June 10, 2024.

It will review the current exemption system, assess its impact on revenue and industry misuse, and propose a plan to bring these areas into the taxation framework after the expiration of the exemptions on June 30, 2025, as per the PM’s program for NMDs.

Additionally, the committee will engage with stakeholders to raise awareness and help the industry transition to the standard taxation system.

The committee is expected to submit its report and recommendations within four weeks for review and consideration by the Prime Minister, with FBR providing secretarial support.
