Islamabad, Sep 28: PM Sharif Departing New York After Successful UN Visit on His Way Home. After an intense five days in New York, which included an agenda that culminated in his speech to the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif left the city on Friday afternoon.
Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Usman Jadoon, Consul General in New York Aamir Atozai, Ambassador to the US Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, and Pakistan’s Munir Akram all waved him off at the airport.
The prime minister spoke for twenty-one minutes, covering all the major topics on the Assembly’s 79th session agenda. He was particularly concerned about resolving long-standing concerns, such as the Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine questions.
On the fringes of the session, he also attended a number of summits, such as the high-level gathering on the existential risks presented by sea level rise and the open discussion on leadership for peace held by the UN Security Council.
He held bilateral talks with a number of international leaders, including the presidents of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as leaders of delegations from the UK, Iran, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Maldives, as well as Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN, and Philemon Yang, President of the UNGA. He also spoke at meetings with investors and businesspeople in the US.
