Islamabad, Sep 15: : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday instructed relevant authorities to formulate a detailed financial framework for electric vehicles by November this year and streamline licensing regulations for their manufacturing in Pakistan.

The prime minister presided over a meeting and gave the go-ahead for authorities to hold crucial discussions about the electric car policy with the Finance Ministry, State Bank of Pakistan, all provinces, federal agencies, and pertinent parties.

“The government is prioritizing the promotion of electric vehicles in the country,” Shehbaz added. These automobiles will improve the environment in addition to saving significant foreign cash by lowering the import of gasoline and diesel.

In addition, he declared that government school outstanding students will receive e-motorbikes, based on the same concept as the laptop program.

He also gave the Capital Development Authority (CDA) instructions to create a thorough plan for introducing electrified public transportation in Islamabad.

According to information provided at the briefing, 25 firms have already started producing two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles locally since 2022, when 49 licenses were granted for such manufacturing.

The meeting was informed that the country currently has 45,000 two-and three-wheeled electric vehicles as well as 2,600 four-wheeled electric vehicles.
