Islamabad, Aug 21: The United Nations General Assembly has announced a provisional list of speakers for its annual General Debate, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to appear on September 26.

The 79th session of the 193-member Assembly will feature a high-level debate from September 24 to 30. Prime Minister Sharif last spoke before the UN General Assembly in 2022. This will be his second speech to the body that sets international policy.

As of right now, over 130 international leaders have confirmed that they will be attending the debate, according to UN General Assembly spokesman Monica Greylay. Issues pertaining to global peace and security will be discussed. The UN periodically updates its provisional list of speakers in the weeks preceding the session to take into consideration any modifications to leader, minister, and ambassador schedules, attendance, or speaking slots.

The 79th session of the Assembly will convene in the midst of escalating global tensions due to multiple ongoing conflicts, such as those in Palestine, Ukraine, and Sudan. The session officially begins on September 10. However, the Assembly’s ambitious agenda also seeks to pave the way for the creation of a new global development framework that will safeguard the environment and advance equality, justice, and prosperity for all.

The debate’s customary opener, Brazil, will start the high-level meeting on September 24.The host nation, the United States, will next present President Joe Biden with his farewell speech to world leaders from the famous UN General Assembly venue. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will deliver his report on the Work of the Organization, which will cover the events of the previous year, prior to the session.

During the high-level week, Guterres is also hosting the ambitious Summit of the Future at UN Headquarters. The dates of the summit are set for September 22–23. The adoption of the Pact for the Future is anticipated, encompassing the addition of a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as appendices.

The Summit, according to the UN, was a high-level gathering designed to create a new global agreement on improving the present and preserving the future. In an environment of mistrust and with antiquated frameworks that no longer adequately capture the political and economic realities of today, the UN states that “effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve.”

There are also more important meetings planned: Wednesday, September 25, is the day of the high-level plenary meeting on addressing the existential concerns posed by sea level rise.Thursday, September 26 is the date of the high-level plenary conference honoring and promoting the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons and the high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance.
