On Monday, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, expressed confidence that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s upcoming visit to China, scheduled from June 4-8, 2024, would mark a significant milestone in the strengthening of bilateral relations. In an interview with APP, the ambassador highlighted the extensive preparations underway for the visit, including discussions on Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) which are in their final stages.
During his visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz will meet with key Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. These meetings will focus on various aspects of China-Pakistan relations and mutual interests, aiming to chart a blueprint for future bilateral cooperation. In addition to Beijing, the Prime Minister’s itinerary includes visits to Guangdong and Shaanxi provinces.
Ambassador Jiang emphasized the enduring friendship between China and Pakistan, describing it as “steady as Mount Tai.” He highlighted the successful cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the realm of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which has significantly contributed to Pakistan’s economic and social development.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Jiang expressed China’s readiness to work closely with Pakistan to further enhance cooperation, especially within the framework of the second phase of CPEC. This includes accelerating progress on key projects such as the upgradation of ML-1, development of the Gwadar Port, and realignment of Karakoram Highway Phase II. Additionally, both countries aim to deepen cooperation in various sectors such as industry, agriculture, mining, and information technology.
Regarding security cooperation, Ambassador Jiang emphasized the importance of a secure environment for practical cooperation, particularly in light of the Dasu terrorist attack. He commended Pakistan’s efforts in combating terrorism and pledged China’s support in enhancing Pakistan’s counter-terrorism capacity-building.
In conclusion, Ambassador Jiang highlighted China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development goals and fostering a strong, enduring partnership between the two nations. He expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation, guided by the principles of the Global Security Initiative, would contribute to mutual prosperity and stability in the region.
