Islamabad, Sep8: Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Climate Change Coordinator, asked the governments of Sindh and Balochistan to step up their efforts to protect maritime ecosystems on Sunday.
Romina Alam demanded the creation of more Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in order to meet the worldwide goal of safeguarding thirty percent of the ocean by 2030, in response to Churna Island’s designation as an MPA by the Balochistani government. Alam called the Balochistan government’s decision to safeguard Churna Island a “positive step towards protecting marine resources and promoting environmentally sustainable development.” He also applauded the government’s action.
Presently Pakistan’s second MPA is Churna Island, which is renowned for its vast coral habitats and biodiversity. There are more than 50 kinds of coral on the island, 250 kinds of fish, plus an abundance of animals and invertebrates.
She pledged her whole support to the government of Balochistan in its efforts to preserve maritime biodiversity, the island’s delicate ecosystem, and its wide variety of species. The Coordinator emphasized the significance of implementing ecosystem-based management strategies to minimize human impacts and guarantee the sustainable use of marine resources, given that there are more than 5,000 MPAs worldwide, which account for more than 8% of the ocean.
In order to solve these environmental concerns, she emphasized the need of safeguarding marine habitats and species from climate change and human activity. She also emphasized the need for shared responsibility and collective action.
Alam stated that this program will assist in controlling human activities that damage the nation’s marine ecosystems and shield the islands from dangers including pollution, overfishing, and the effects of climate change. She also emphasized Pakistan’s dedication to promoting marine conservation initiatives in cooperation with all pertinent governmental and non-governmental partners, notably through the restoration of mangroves, which has increased by 300% in the nation since 1992.
