ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 19: In July 2024, the nation’s power generation increased by 0.3 percent year over year to 14,880 gigawatt hours (GWh), and by 11 percent month over month to 13,461 GWh.

In July 2024, the average cost of fuel for power generation increased by 7% YoY to Rs. 9.
Fuel costs decreased by 6% to Rs. 8.8 per unit in FY24. RLNG (20%), Nuclear (13.4%), and Hydel (35.9%) were the top three contributors as of June 2024.

In July 2024, the amount of power generated using hydrogen (hydel) dropped by 3% YoY to 5,341 GWh from 5,518 GWh the previous year. Compared to 4,729 GWh in June, the mom growth in Hydel-based power generation in July was 13%.

The generation of RLNG electricity increased by 2% year over year, from 2,918 GWh in July 2023 to 2,970 GWh in July 2024. In terms of MoM, RLNG generation has increased by 22%. While monthly coal (imported) power generation shows a 78 percent increase from 637 GWh observed the previous month, coal (imported) power generation declined by 48 percent YoY to 1,137 GWh in July 2024 from 2,180 GWh last year.

Nuclear power generation fell by 1% MoM from 1,998 GWh in June 2024 to 1,988 GWh in July 2024, a YoY reduction from 2,107 GWh in the previous year.
In July 2024, solar-powered generation reached 110 GWh, rising 47% YoY from 75 GWh the previous year.

Fuel Cost

In July 2024, fuel costs for electricity generation grew by 7% YoY and 4% MoM to an average of Rs. 9/unit; in July 2023, the average cost was Rs. 8.3/unit, and in June 2024, it was Rs. 8.6/unit.
In July 2024, Furnace Oil was the most expensive at Rs. 31 per unit, while RLNG was the second most expensive at the same time.
