Islamabad, Aug 25: The rumors that ATMs all over Pakistan are closing because of a problem with LDI networks, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), are untrue.
“In response to the false information spreading in the media regarding the possible shutdown of ATMs, it is made clear that there isn’t a problem with LDI networks being unavailable or closed at this time that might affect the IT or financial sectors, including ATM networks,” the statement released on Saturday said. According to it, the LDI licensees whose licenses have expired are not ceasing to operate.
This follows news on Friday that PTA predicted an impending crisis in Pakistan’s telecom industry brought on by possible license non-renewals for Long Distance International (LDI), based on a document that was submitted to the Parliament.
PTA believes that 50% of mobile traffic could be affected, taking many cell towers offline, according to the document. Moreover, disruptions in business internet connections may also impact 40% of ATM banking services and 10% of internet traffic. The PTA’s decision to refuse license renewals is a result of unpaid debts; telecom businesses must pay Rs. 54 billion in late payment fees, and LDI companies are purportedly owed Rs. 24 billion in Universal Service Fund levies.
There are currently a number of LDI licenses that have expired and more that will in the upcoming months. In its most recent statement, PTA, however, ruled out the idea of an LDI activities ban.
