ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 17: The progressive termination of illicit SIM cards has been started by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The first round, which began on Friday, entailed disabling SIM cards associated with canceled or fraudulent identification cards. Sources said that SIMs were being disabled because of information gleaned by NADRA.

While banning SIMs registered under the names of deceased people would be the main emphasis of the third phase, the second phase would deal with SIMs registered to expired ID cards.

Users have been warned through SMS to update their SIM-related data before the SIMs are shut down.
PTA sources emphasized that since phony SIMs were being used in a variety of illicit operations, it was undesirable to use mobile SIMs illegally.
