Islamabad, Dec 3: According to proposals released by the Punjab government, 102 electric buses will be introduced in Rawalpindi. The project, which would cost Rs. 7 billion, intends to make the city’s public transit greener and less polluting.
The 84-kilometer route that the electric buses will travel will cover ten important public transportation routes. The program has received Rs. 4.7 billion from the provincial government so far. It is anticipated that by reducing environmental pollution in the area, the project will greatly enhance air quality.
In June, Bilal Akbar Khan, the transport minister for Punjab, affirmed that the e-bus service would start the next year. The buses will travel a number of significant routes, such as one that connects Daultala to Rawalpindi and another that connects Taxila, Wah Cantt, and IJP Road to Octori 26.
Maryam Nawaz, the chief minister of Punjab, authorized an extension of the project in August, increasing the total number of electric buses to 200. During Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China, an agreement was reached to address environmental concerns and promote environmentally friendly transportation throughout Pakistan, including Islamabad and other provinces. This decision comes after that agreement.
Public transportation in Rawalpindi and the Rawalpindi Cantonment will be enhanced by the new electric buses, which will provide services of an international caliber. The project also entails building a new bus terminal at Adamjee Road in Rawalpindi Cantonment and a modern bus terminal with a 100-bus capacity at the former GTS bus depot in Chohard Choke. In order to assist the electric fleet, 40 electric chargers will also be placed at these terminals.
