Punjab is making significant strides in enhancing its property tax collection system by incorporating housing societies located in peri-urban areas into its tax network, a move initiated by the Excise Department.

For the first time, property owners in government-sanctioned housing societies situated beyond the traditional urban boundaries will find themselves obliged to contribute property taxes.

The tax will be calculated based on the Deputy Commissioner (DC) rates, which have been specially adjusted to reflect the value of properties in these emerging zones. This system aims to streamline the assessment process, wherein the Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO) will have the authority to evaluate and finalize tax duties.

This policy shift is poised to bring approximately 2.5 million property holders into the tax fold, significantly broadening the scope of tax collection in the region.

The expansion into these previously untaxed areas is anticipated to boost the state’s tax revenues substantially, providing necessary funds that could be directed towards improving local infrastructure, services, and community development projects.

The decision, backed by the Excise Department, received the green light from the cabinet and is now awaiting a formal nod with a detailed summary set to be presented to the government within the week. This development represents a proactive approach by Punjab’s government to ensure a fair taxation system and promote fiscal equity among its residents.

This initiative not only aims to enhance the efficiency of tax collection but also ensures a more equitable distribution of tax liabilities among property owners. By including more areas under its ambit, the government is taking decisive steps toward creating a more inclusive financial system that captures the true value of its burgeoning real estate sectors.
