Islamabad, Dec 30: The Punjab government has unveiled plans to introduce an electric taxi service across the province, inspired by China’s successful electric vehicle (EV) taxi models. The initiative will be supervised by Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, following the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The Punjab Transport Department has begun the initial steps for the program, engaging with various electric vehicle manufacturers. Notably, the Deewan Group and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have shown interest in the project.

The service will be rolled out in phases, starting with Lahore and divisional headquarters, before extending to other major cities in Punjab. The taxis will operate 24/7, ensuring continuous transportation for residents. Additionally, the program will allow drivers to purchase electric vehicles with flexible payment options, including down payments and installment plans, to make vehicle ownership more accessible.

This initiative is driven by growing concerns over air pollution caused by vehicle emissions. The transport department anticipates that the program will help reduce urban air pollution while also creating employment opportunities in the transportation sector.

The government has yet to announce specific details regarding the launch dates or pricing for the vehicles.
