Islamabad, Mar 17, 2025: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has taken decisive action by shutting down eight bottled water plants after laboratory tests exposed dangerously high levels of harmful chemicals and bacteria, rendering the water unfit for human consumption.

This move follows an investigation by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), which uncovered that multiple bottled water brands contained hazardous contaminants.

Despite being promoted as a healthier alternative in a country grappling with widespread water contamination, these brands pose significant health threats to consumers.

The test findings, assessed against the standards set by the Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority, revealed alarming concentrations of arsenic, microbial impurities, and toxic chemicals.

Consequently, PFA has sealed the following production units: SS Water and Pak Acqua RO Mineral Water in Sahiwal, Premium Safa Purified Water, Orwell, Natural Pure Life, and Life Inn Water Plant in Multan, Sky Rain in Faisalabad, and Iced Well in Sialkot.

PFA Director General Asim Javed emphasized that these plants will remain non-operational until they comply with stringent corrective measures.

The mandatory improvements include enhancing water filtration processes, ensuring workers undergo medical screenings, and upgrading purification systems to meet safety standards.

The PCRWR report further highlighted that some brands contained excessive levels of sodium, arsenic, and potassium, while others were contaminated with harmful bacteria.

These hazardous elements can lead to severe health complications such as digestive infections, kidney disorders, hypertension, nervous system issues, and even life-threatening diseases like cancer.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding public health by enforcing strict regulations on bottled water companies.

Consumers are advised to remain cautious and verify the safety of bottled water before consumption to prevent potential health hazards.
