Islamabad, Apr 21, 2025: To address the growing issue of air pollution, the Punjab government is taking steps to mandate fitness certificates for motorcycles.
This initiative aims to broaden the current vehicle fitness program, which currently applies solely to cars and other motor vehicles.
As per the details, these proposed modifications will be presented in the Punjab Assembly under the “Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2025.” These revisions will update the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, specifically including the term “motorcycle” alongside “vehicle” in Section 38-A. The bill has been sent to the relevant committee, which is expected to present its findings within two months.
If the bill is passed, motorcycle owners will need to acquire a fitness certificate that remains valid for one year, similar to the current regulations for other vehicles.

Officials highlight that motorcycles represent 85% of daily travel in Punjab.
The objective is to promote road safety and minimize hazardous emissions, which are significant contributors to smog, especially during the winter months.
Authorities believe this measure will contribute to improving the air quality in the province, aligning with broader efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation.
