Islamabad, Oct 11: Punjab University Announces Removal of Air Conditioners from Hostels to Cut Energy Costs. The vice chancellor of Punjab University has ordered that all air conditioners (ACs) be taken out of the residence halls on campus.
Concerns regarding the improper usage of ACs, which has been resulting in large financial losses for the organization, prompted the decision to make this change. University sources claim that a large number of hostel inmates have been using air conditioners for prolonged periods of time without paying their share of the electricity bills, which has led to significant monthly expenses.
According to administrative estimates, the university has been losing hundreds of thousands of rupees a month due to uncontrolled electricity consumption.The administration made it clear that air conditioners are not allowed in dorms; the only people who are exempt are international students and those with certain medical needs, who may install air conditioners with authorization.
Officials have ordered circuit breakers to be installed in order to prohibit unapproved usage of air conditioners and heaters. An administrative spokesperson clarified, “The use of air conditioners and heaters has driven up electricity bills, making it unsustainable for the university to cover these costs.”
Punjab University’s hostel costs are fixed at Rs 2,000 per month, but the cost of power has increased, making the university’s financial situation worse. Axing air conditioners is a critical step in reducing financial losses and encouraging equitable use of electrical resources, officials emphasized.
