Islamabad, Feb 20: The Punjab government has approved an ambitious project to establish 400 floating wetland ponds across the province, aiming to enhance water conservation and environmental sustainability. This initiative recently received a green light from the Provincial External Financing Assessment Committee under the Planning and Development (P&D) Department.

During a briefing to the Lahore High Court, officials presented a series of environmental initiatives, including traffic management plans for the Champions Trophy 2025, advanced solid waste disposal systems, water conservation measures, and an extensive plantation drive. These steps are designed to combat pollution, improve urban infrastructure, and promote ecological balance.

Long-Term Environmental Benefits

Justice Karim, acknowledging the progress, directed the Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC) to submit regular updates on its environmental projects. He emphasized that effective water conservation strategies would significantly benefit future generations, ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.

A comprehensive report by the PMDFC Managing Director outlined key ongoing projects, including:

  • Installation of wastewater treatment plants to reduce water pollution.
  • Construction of rainwater storage tanks at drainage points to prevent urban flooding.
  • Sustainable waste management solutions, including the efficient use of gases produced from waste decomposition.

New Regulations for Sustainable Development

In another major development, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) informed the court that new regulations mandating greywater treatment plants in commercial buildings have been officially approved. These regulations mark a significant step towards reducing water wastage and promoting recycling efforts in urban areas.

With these strategic initiatives, Punjab is moving towards a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future. The government’s proactive approach to water conservation, waste management, and urban planning reflects its commitment to environmental preservation and climate resilience.
