Islamabad, Feb 1: Punjab has taken a major step towards sustainable public transport with the launch of its first fully electric bus service in Lahore. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the eco-friendly fleet, which aims to reduce pollution and provide modern travel facilities to the citizens.
State-of-the-Art Electric Buses
The newly introduced electric buses are designed to enhance the commuting experience. Each bus can accommodate up to 80 passengers, including 30 seated passengers. The buses are equipped with cutting-edge features such as:
- GPS tracking for real-time monitoring
- Free Wi-Fi to keep passengers connected
- USB ports for convenient charging
- Accessibility ramps for people with disabilities
Sustainable and Efficient Travel
To support the electric bus initiative, nine specialized charging stations have been set up across the city. These buses can travel up to 250 kilometers on a full charge, ensuring seamless operations throughout the day. Additionally, a digital wallet and card payment system will be introduced, allowing passengers to enjoy a cashless travel experience.

Route and Frequency
The electric buses will initially operate on a 21-kilometer route, connecting the Lahore Railway Station to Green Town. The service is set to begin by mid-February, with buses running at an interval of every 9 minutes. A total of 42 modern bus shelters will be installed along the route, ensuring convenience and comfort for passengers. The service is expected to cater to approximately 17,000 commuters daily.
Enhanced Passenger Facilities
CM Maryam Nawaz has also directed authorities to improve bus stop infrastructure by installing solar-powered fans, water coolers, and security cameras at key locations. Additionally, special training will be provided to 70 bus drivers to ensure safe and efficient transport services.
Future Expansion: Electric Taxis
The government is also exploring the possibility of introducing electric taxis in Punjab as part of its broader vision for eco-friendly transportation. This initiative aligns with the province’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy solutions.
With these advancements, Punjab’s public transport sector is set to undergo a revolutionary transformation, making commuting more efficient, sustainable, and passenger friendly.
