Islamabad, Feb 27: In a groundbreaking move, Qualcomm and Google have joined forces to extend Android software and security updates for up to eight years. This initiative, first highlighted by 9to5Google, is set to improve device longevity and reduce software fragmentation across the Android ecosystem.
Under this program, OEMs will gain extended access to essential platform software, including Android OS and kernel updates, for eight continuous years. Thanks to Google’s Project Treble, which decouples vendor-specific code from the core Android OS, manufacturers can now implement updates with fewer modifications. This not only simplifies the update process but also encourages brands to provide prolonged software support for their devices.
Additionally, the program introduces two major upgrades to the Android Common Kernel (ACK), ensuring that smartphones benefit from regular security patches and performance optimizations throughout their lifespan. While manufacturers still hold the final decision on update rollouts, Qualcomm’s initiative effectively removes chipset-related constraints that previously hindered long-term software support.

Benefits for OEMs and Consumers
This extended update policy could lower costs for manufacturers while encouraging users to retain their devices for longer periods. Tech giants like Google and Samsung have already pledged seven years of updates for upcoming models such as the Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25. However, Qualcomm’s initiative takes it a step further by offering an even longer update cycle for Snapdragon 8 and 7-series chipsets launching later this year. Unfortunately, older Snapdragon models will not be included in this extended support program.
Rollout and Future Implications
The first devices to benefit from this initiative will be powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite and launch with Android 15. Qualcomm also plans to expand this program to cover the next five generations of Snapdragon chipsets, ensuring that more users can enjoy long-term software support.
Industry leaders have already praised this initiative. Seang Chau, Google’s VP and GM of Android Platform, highlighted how this effort simplifies security and software updates for OEMs. Similarly, Chris Patrick, Qualcomm’s Senior VP and GM of Mobile Handsets, described it as a transformative step toward improving user experiences and increasing flexibility within the Android ecosystem.
By setting a new benchmark for Android updates, Qualcomm and Google are driving a shift towards improved device security, enhanced longevity, and greater overall user satisfaction. If widely adopted, this initiative could redefine the standard for Android software support moving forward.
