Islamabad, Dec 24: Starting January 1, 2025, Rawalpindi will implement an e-challan system for traffic violations, utilizing Safe City cameras as part of the final phase of the project. This initiative, backed by the Punjab Safe City Authority (PSCA), aims to enhance traffic monitoring and help identify criminal activities. It is modeled after similar systems already in place in various parts of Punjab.
The system will use surveillance cameras to monitor traffic on major roads and highways, such as COD Chowk, Liaquat Bagh, Raja Bazaar, Chandni Chowk, Jinnah Park, and Faizabad Metro Station, among others. These cameras, which are already operational, will capture traffic violations and issue fines directly to the violators’ mobile phones and home addresses.
Key traffic violations under the new system include:
- Motorcyclists without helmets will face a fine of Rs. 1,500.
- Non-compliant number plates on motorcycles will incur a fine of Rs. 2,000.
- Riders using the fast lane without proper documentation, such as a license or national identity card, will be fined.
- Minor riders will result in FIRs filed against their guardians.
In addition to motorcyclists, car owners will also be penalized for offenses such as overspeeding, driving in the wrong direction, or failing to wear seat belts. Vehicles with tinted windows or non-computerized number plates will attract additional fines.
The e-challan system will be supported by photographic evidence, minimizing disputes over fines. Traffic authorities anticipate the system will address public concerns regarding unnecessary fines and provide greater transparency in the enforcement process. Once fully operational, the Safe City project will expand its coverage to include more traffic violations and will contribute significantly to road safety and law enforcement in the region.
