Islamabad, Dec 15: The Punjab government is set to launch a Rs7 billion e-transport system in the garrison city by the end of this month.
Under this project, 102 electric buses will operate on 10 newly established routes, spanning 86 kilometers, connecting various key locations, including the airport, railway station, metro bus stations, general bus stand, Islamabad, and other city areas.
The buses are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
According to officials, the first phase of the project involves constructing a bus depot at Siham on Peshawar Road.
The depot, covering 28 kanals near Pirwadhai Morr, will feature modern amenities such as an administration block, driver rest areas, electric charging stations, maintenance and washing facilities, a cafeteria, and a mosque.
Construction is slated to commence by the end of this month to ensure the buses are operational promptly after the depot’s completion.
The provincial government aims to tackle pollution in Rawalpindi and its cantonment areas through this initiative.
The new transport system will also integrate with the metro bus service in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, enhancing convenience for citizens.
Special provisions will be made at bus stops for women, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities.
In addition to the depot, the Punjab government has tasked the local administration with building bus stops along the 10 routes.
Nespak conducted the feasibility study, and the project received approval last month.
Construction of the bus stations will begin in a month or two, with efforts underway to complete the project before the November 2025 deadline.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Cheema highlighted that better transport options at reasonable fares would encourage people to switch from other public transport modes, thereby reducing air pollution.
He added that the project is designed to provide a sustainable and inclusive transport solution for the residents.
Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Secretary Rashid Ali confirmed the allocation of 10 routes for the project, based on a passenger demand and pollution survey. The routes include:
- 8.2 km: Rawalpindi Railway Station to Lahore High Court.
- 11.3 km: Koral Chowk to Fawara Chowk.
- 8.8 km: Umar Baig Chowk to Mandi Mor.
- 8.3 km: Munawar Colony to Saddar.
- 13.1 km: Marrir Chowk to Motorway Morr.
- 12.3 km: Faizabad to Tramri Chowk.
- 5.8 km: IJP Metro Station to Kuri Road.
- 7.5 km: Saddar to Lalarukh Colony.
- 6.5 km: Umair Baig Road to Qadeemi Imambargah Muhallah.
- 7 km: Saddar to Qabaristan.
DC Cheema also noted that the project has progressed rapidly due to the coordination of various district departments, ensuring timely completion and availability of the service to the public.
