Islamabad, Feb 12: Russia and Pakistan are set to enhance cooperation in multiple sectors, focusing on energy, industry, agriculture, and transport in 2025, according to a statement by Albert P. Khorev, the Russian Ambassador to Pakistan. Speaking to the state-owned TASS News Agency, Khorev highlighted the ongoing efforts to modernize the Karachi Steel Mills and emphasized the importance of developing international transport corridors. Among the key projects being considered is the modernization of the Quetta-Taftan railway line, aimed at improving connectivity and facilitating trade between the two nations.

Khorev also discussed the potential of increasing maritime cargo transportation, which holds promise for strengthening trade links. In addition, both countries are committed to utilizing the “North-South” and the “Belarus-Russia-Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan” transport corridors to enhance regional connectivity and promote economic growth.

The Ambassador further noted that both Russia and Pakistan share a commitment to ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan. He reiterated Russia’s support for Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between Pakistan, Russia, and Afghanistan in addressing security challenges. This cooperation is being fostered through multilateral forums such as the Moscow Format of Consultations, which involves Afghanistan’s neighbors.

With regard to regional cooperation, Khorev stressed the growing relevance of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which has become a significant platform for regional dialogue amid shifting global dynamics. He highlighted the importance of strengthening economic ties within the SCO, particularly in areas like industrial cooperation, financial institutions, transport and logistics, and countering emerging global threats.

Russia and Pakistan also share a constructive partnership at the United Nations, particularly on issues like information security and preventing the arms race in outer space. The Ambassador welcomed Pakistan’s interest in participating in the BRICS organization, noting the potential benefits of Pakistan’s involvement in the New Development Bank, which focuses on financing infrastructure and sustainable development projects.This strategic alignment between Russia and Pakistan underscores the desire of both nations to deepen bilateral ties and tackle common regional and global challenges.
