Islamabad, Oct 12: Saba Qamar UNICEF Pakistan First National Ambassador for Child Rights
On the International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to strengthening girls’ rights and acknowledging the unique challenges they face worldwide, Unicef announced Saba Qamar’s nomination as its first National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan.
Working with Unicef is an honor. In a message to the media, Qamar said, “No matter where I go, I will intensify our common goal of protecting every child’s right.”
“I’ve recently been traveling, and I’ve seen firsthand the struggles that women and children in Pakistan face as well as the benefits that Unicef’s work brings.” I’m determined to do my share to help Pakistan’s young and children realize their dreams and fulfill their ambitions.”
The well-known “Kamli” and “Hindi Medium” actress, who is also Unicef Pakistan’s National Ambassador, will use her platform to spread awareness about important child rights issues like child marriage, mental health, education, gender equality, and the effects of exploitation, violence, and child poverty.
Pakistan has 19 million child brides, ranking sixth in the world. More than half of teenage females fall pregnant before they turn 18, putting the mother’s and the child’s lives in danger.
Saba Qamar UNICEF Pakistan cautions that child marriage in Pakistan would continue for decades if nothing were done about it right away. In order to put an end to this detrimental behavior and safeguard the nation’s young girls—a valuable but underutilized resource—a comprehensive social approach is required.
“I am thrilled to welcome Saba Qamar to Unicef. She is a bold and passionate advocate for the rights of women and girls,” said Unicef Representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil. “We look forward to working closely with her to spotlight some of the biggest challenges facing children in Pakistan and intensify our efforts to help every child reach their full potential,” he added.
