Islamabad, Dec 31: The under-construction Rawalpindi Safe City Control and Command Building is expected to be finished within two months. Punjab Minister for Communication and Works Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth recently inspected the project, accompanied by senior officials from the Communication and Works Department.

Project Overview:

The building spans 63,000 square feet and includes a basement, ground floor, and first floor, all of which have been completed. Final construction and finishing work are in progress, with civil construction projected to conclude in 60 days. Imported materials will be installed within four months. Limited operational capabilities have already been facilitated for the Safe City Authority during this transitional phase.

The minister reiterated the Punjab government’s commitment to modernizing urban infrastructure and announced additional funding to ensure timely completion.

Safe City Project Highlights:

  • 1,886 cameras have been installed across 306 locations in Rawalpindi, covering key highways, business hubs, and public spaces.
  • A Punjab Police Integrated Command, Control, and Communication Centre is operational, allowing city monitoring through a digital wall.
  • Cameras are fully functional in high-traffic areas like Murree Road, Liaquat Bagh, Raja Bazaar, and Saddar Bank Road.

The Safe City cameras will soon enable e-challans for traffic violations, similar to Lahore. These include monitoring motorcyclists without helmets, unclear number plates, and other offenses.

Student Engagement with Safe City Islamabad:

Iqra University students recently toured Safe City Islamabad under the Friends of Police program. The delegation observed the command center, modern surveillance cameras, and online women police station. They were briefed on the system’s efficiency in crime prevention and resolution, with 42% of crimes resolved through Safe City operations.

Face recognition cameras installed at city entry and exit points further enhance security by identifying suspicious individuals. Students praised the system’s role in ensuring public safety.
