Islamabad, Jan 27: The Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom has approved the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2025 with a majority vote of four in favor and two against. The bill, which has passed through the committee, aims to spearhead the nation’s digital transformation by establishing robust governance structures.

One of the key provisions of the bill is the creation of a 17-member National Digital Commission, which will be led by the Prime Minister.

The commission will include the chief ministers from all provinces, along with federal ministers and heads of major organizations like the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

This diverse representation will help ensure coordinated efforts across the government to achieve the goal of becoming a fully digital nation.

The primary focus of the commission will be to oversee the development and execution of a National Digital Master Plan. This plan will guide Pakistan’s journey towards complete digital transformation, addressing key issues such as infrastructure, policy coordination, and technology adoption. The commission will have the authority to take necessary actions if any government body fails to comply with the master plan’s directives.

Additionally, the establishment of a Pakistan Digital Authority is part of the bill, which will have the responsibility of executing the master plan. The authority’s chairman and members will be appointed for a four-year term by the Prime Minister. To ensure the effectiveness of these initiatives, a Strategic Oversight Committee will also be formed to evaluate the authority’s performance, with the relevant federal minister presiding over it.

With these provisions, the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2025 lays the foundation for a digitally empowered future.
