ISLAMABAD, JULY22: The Pattoki municipal authorities’ negligence has resulted in polluted dirty water in the city’s streets. A local resident claims that the entire city smells, and overflowing sewer water has flooded into the streets and markets. The city’s inadequate sanitation arrangements give the impression that some areas are garbage dumps. A representative of the Pattoki tehsil administration stated that the clogged drains were caused by malfunctioning sewerage system motors. The administration is working to improve the city’s sanitation conditions.

Farooq Ali, a resident, said that the overflowing sewage had entered the streets, markets, and homes because the sewerage lines had not been cleaned in a timely manner. He claimed that the Mega Road, Hilla Road, several squares and streets in the Old Market, Basti Sohan Ki, Abbas Park, and other commercial areas were in poor condition and that it was now impossible for people to walk on them. Haji Muhammad Aslam, another resident, claimed that the Hilla Road, which was built at a cost of millions of rupees, had become dilapidated due to a lack of a sewerage system. The Old Market area was also affected.

The mayor expressed concern that the city’s contaminated water pools might cause epidemic diseases, adding that the situation had gotten worse after the recent rain. Several bazaars in the city’s densely populated areas looked like ponds, he said, and Muhammad Afzal, a resident of one of the affected localities, said that the problem had been made worse by the lack of action taken to remove garbage from several areas. When it rains, the garbage flows into the water and into homes in low-lying areas, causing a host of diseases to afflict children and elderly individuals. The president of a local traders’ organization, Rana Mumtaz Khan, stated that the local government had been made aware of the issue multiple times, but nothing had been done to address it.He suggested that in order to expedite the sanitation and sewerage system, the Kasur district administration act right away.
