Karachi: In a significant move aimed at improving road safety, the Sindh government has resolved to cancel the registration of all defective and unsafe commercial vehicles operating within the province.
This decision is part of a broader initiative to modernize the public transportation network and enforce stricter vehicle safety standards.
Alongside this measure, the provincial government is also preparing to roll out a new route for the Green Line and Orange Line transport services starting next week.
The introduction of the new route is expected to enhance connectivity and streamline urban mobility in Karachi.
At the center of these decisions was a high-level meeting convened at the Sindh Secretariat, chaired by Sindh’s Senior Minister for Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon.
The session was attended by several key stakeholders, including Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kamal Dayo, Project Director of the People’s Bus Service Sohaib Shafiq, and other senior officials from the Transport and Mass Transit Department.
One of the major highlights of the meeting was the announcement of a new initiative specifically designed to empower women through accessible mobility.
Minister Memon directed the Transport Department to initiate a “Pink Electric Vehicle Scooter Scheme” exclusively for women.
Under this scheme, working women and female students will be eligible to apply for electric scooters, provided they possess a valid driving license—a condition that underscores the government’s emphasis on safety and regulation.

The meeting also reviewed the status of various transport projects underway in the province, with a particular focus on efforts to enhance road safety.
It was decided that a modern commercial vehicle inspection regime would be developed to systematically address the issue of unfit vehicles on the roads.
To support this, the government will establish dedicated Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) centers along key transit corridors, including the National Highway and the Superhighway.
These centers will be tasked with conducting technical inspections of commercial vehicles to ensure compliance with safety standards, thereby preventing defective vehicles from operating and posing risks to public safety.
