Islamabad, Feb 28: The Sindh government has approved the procurement of new buses for Karachi, including modern double-decker and electric buses, to enhance public transportation. This decision was announced by Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon during a press briefing.
Memon emphasized that the cabinet has also taken steps to introduce automation in anti-narcotics operations to strengthen law enforcement. He highlighted that while the federal government had pledged to provide 180 electric buses, the necessary funds for their acquisition have not yet been released.
To empower women and promote independent mobility, the provincial administration plans to distribute free pink scooters to women who hold a valid two-wheeler license. Additionally, a monthly lottery system will be introduced to award electric bikes to eligible women, including students and working professionals. To ensure accessibility, women who are inexperienced in bike riding will receive professional training from female instructors.

In an effort to maintain fairness, recipients of these electric bikes will not be allowed to sell them for a period of seven years. This measure aims to ensure that the initiative genuinely benefits women who need reliable transportation for daily commuting.
Addressing concerns regarding the bus design, Memon stated that both he and the Chief Minister, who have engineering backgrounds, had initially raised objections to the proposed design. Their concerns were later validated, leading to necessary improvements to ensure that the buses meet the required safety and quality standards.
This initiative marks a significant step in transforming Karachi’s public transport system, making it more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive. The Sindh government’s proactive approach aims to address the city’s growing transportation needs while fostering gender inclusivity and environmental responsibility.
