Islamabad, Jan 30: The installation of smart meters has begun in most districts of Uttar Pradesh, aiming to eliminate billing errors and provide real-time electricity usage tracking for consumers. The Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (Kesco) is leading the initiative by installing 650,000 smart meters in the city over the next two years.

Key Features of the Smart Meter System:
- Real-Time Tracking: Consumers will be able to check their daily electricity consumption on a mobile app being developed by the electricity department.
- Billing Accuracy: Smart meters will eliminate the need for manual readings, resolving billing discrepancies that currently cause thousands of complaints daily.
- Smart Prepaid System: Only meters above 25 kilowatts will be billed traditionally; all other meters will be prepaid smart meters, allowing consumers to monitor and manage their electricity expenses effectively.
- No Additional Cost for Consumers: Consumers will not be charged for replacing existing meters with smart meters.
Current Status and Future Plans:
- So far, 150,000 smart meters have been installed.
- 30,000 check meters are being tested to ensure accuracy.
- A budget of ₹582 crore has been allocated for the project.
- Complete transition to smart meters is expected within two years.
Kesco’s Consumer App:
- Allows users to track daily electricity usage.
- Provides details on units consumed and billing amount.
- Aims to remove reliance on traditional billing meters.
According to Kesco Director Rakesh Varshney, the initiative will make the billing system transparent and efficient, providing consumers with better control over their electricity consumption.
