Islamabad, 11 Apr, 2025: In a major push to safeguard public health, the Punjab government has intensified its crackdown on tobacco use, declaring that smoking banned in public spaces will now be strictly enforced under the Prohibition of Smoking Ordinance 2002.

The move, aimed at curbing exposure to secondhand smoke, includes heavy penalties of up to Rs 100,000 for individuals and businesses found violating the law.

The directive prohibits smoking in a range of public environments, including educational campuses, healthcare facilities, government buildings, shopping centres, and onboard public transport.

Officials emphasized that the rule declaring smoking banned in public is non-negotiable and violators will face monetary penalties ranging from Rs1,000 to Rs100,000, depending on the nature and context of the breach.

Presiding over an inter-departmental meeting, Additional Commissioner Coordination Syed Nazrat Ali outlined the enforcement strategy.

“Cigarette vendors must prominently display anti-smoking notices,” Ali noted. “Furthermore, tobacco sales are strictly forbidden within a 50-metre radius of any educational institution. Violators risk fines between Rs5,000 and Rs100,000,” he added.

He further stated that specially appointed officers will be authorized to inspect locations, shut down defiant vendors, impose immediate fines, and confiscate tobacco-related products if necessary. Strict monitoring will be conducted to ensure adherence.

The Punjab administration has also mandated public organizations, especially schools, to assign focal personnel and health trainers to implement and supervise anti-tobacco awareness campaigns.

These measures are part of a broader effort to protect children and young adults from the hazards of smoking.

“Our top priority is shielding students from the influence and dangers of tobacco,” said Ali.

He highlighted tobacco’s well-documented risks, including lung diseases, heart conditions, and throat cancer, which together result in over 160,000 deaths annually in Pakistan.
