Islamabad, Oct 7: Special Olympics Pakistan (SOP) and OMI Hospital have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Karachi, focusing on the health and development of children with intellectual disabilities.
The MoU was signed by Ronak Iqbal Lakhani, Chairperson of SOP, and Kashif Mustafa, Managing Director and CEO of OMI Hospital. The collaboration aims to provide regular health screenings, particularly in pediatrics, cardiology, and neurology, for children aged 2 to 7, to prepare them for both sporting events and life challenges.
To mark the occasion, a pilot screening was conducted for six athletes, with an additional pediatric screening for sixteen more athletes.
Kashif Mustafa emphasized that this partnership will empower special athletes not only in sports but in all aspects of life, reaffirming OMI’s commitment to providing the best care. Ronak Iqbal Lakhani acknowledged the critical role of medical support in enhancing the athletes’ performance and confidence.
The initiative involves key medical professionals, including Dr. Ayesha Awan, who will serve as the Clinical Director under Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Shabbir Hussain.
Additionally, Dr. Syed Ali Raza, Consultant Dental Surgeon, and Dr. Maysam A. Shiraz, Consultant ENT Surgeon, will oversee dental and ENT assessments.
Moreover, partnerships with organizations like the Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT) will provide follow-up eye care for athletes, while Transformation International Wellness Clinics will handle psychological assessments.
Dental follow-ups will be offered by OMI, and the Altmash Institute of Dental Medicine will provide discounted dental screenings. This collaboration marks a significant step in supporting the holistic well-being of children with intellectual disabilities in Pakistan.
