Islamabad, March 21, 2025: Despite official directives to regulate sugar prices, the cost of this essential commodity in Pakistan has surged, reaching up to Rs. 180 per kilogram.
This price hike comes just two days after the Deputy Prime Minister set a fixed retail price of Rs. 164 per kg.

According to the latest figures released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the highest recorded sugar price stands at Rs. 180 per kg, while the national average price is Rs. 170.41 per kg.
Cities Facing the Highest Sugar Prices
Residents in Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar are experiencing the steepest sugar costs, with rates touching Rs. 180 per kg.
Slight Price Drop in the Past Week
The PBS report also indicates a minor decline of Rs. 1.49 per kg in the average sugar price over the last week. The current average rate stands at Rs. 170.41 per kg, compared to Rs. 171.90 per kg the previous week.
Challenges in Controlling Sugar Prices
Despite government efforts, the fluctuation in sugar prices remains a significant challenge.
The increasing cost of sugar continues to burden households across the country, highlighting the need for stronger price control measures to stabilize the market.
