Islamabad, Dec 5: The Supreme Court has revoked its previous ruling that prohibited the government from privatizing Pakistan International Airline (PIA), the country’s flag carrier, without the highest court’s approval.
A suo motu notice about reports of selling significant shares of PIA at a lower price was the subject of the case being heard by the six-member Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP), which was presided over by Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan.
In order to establish a judicial panel, determine the losses, and look into the reasons behind the PIA’s significant losses, Justice Saqib Nisar, the country’s chief justice at the time, took suo motu notice of the matter and halted the privatization process.
The order instructed the government to obtain the SCP’s prior consent before moving further with the privatization of PIA. However, in a quick hearing on Thursday, the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench revoked its ruling, opening the door for the government’s intentions to privatize the national airline.
