Islamabad, Jan 12: Toyota has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the Urban Cruiser, a compact SUV reimagined as a battery electric vehicle (BEV). This new model is set to join Toyota’s growing lineup of electric cars and aims to make a strong impression in the competitive European BEV market. The Urban Cruiser is expected to launch in the UK later this summer, with a starting price rumored to exceed £30,000.

Design and Dimensions

The design of the Urban Cruiser reflects Toyota’s signature “hammerhead” design philosophy, combining elements of SUV strength with modern urban aesthetics. Its slim headlights, strong rear quarters, and a wrap-around rear light bar give the vehicle a bold, contemporary look. The compact SUV is slightly larger than the Yaris Cross, offering a 5.2-meter turning radius for exceptional maneuverability in tight city spaces.

Inside, the Urban Cruiser offers an impressive sense of space. Thanks to its 2,700mm wheelbase and a sliding rear seat arrangement, the vehicle provides ample legroom, rivaling larger D-segment models. The cabin showcases traditional SUV elements, such as a horizontal instrument panel and elevated seating for superior visibility. Ambient lighting with 12 customizable color options further enhances the premium feel of the interior.

Electric Platform and Powertrain

The Urban Cruiser is built on Toyota’s new, lightweight platform designed specifically for BEVs. This platform maximizes battery space while maintaining ample room in the cabin. The SUV comes with two battery options:

  • 49-kWh Battery: Delivers 142bhp and is available exclusively with front-wheel drive (FWD).
  • 61-kWh Battery: Available in both front-wheel drive (172bhp) and all-wheel drive (182bhp).

The AWD version is equipped with an additional 48kW motor on the rear axle, making it ideal for off-road performance. It includes features like Downhill Assist Control, Trail Mode, and Snow Mode, ensuring smooth driving in slippery conditions.

Safety and Technology

Toyota has equipped the Urban Cruiser with a comprehensive range of advanced safety features, including pre-collision systems, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure alerts. The vehicle also offers a fully digital user interface, integrating a 10.25-inch driver’s display and a 10.1-inch multimedia touchscreen for a seamless driving experience. Smartphone integration supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for added convenience.

The Urban Cruiser also includes premium features such as a 360-degree camera, JBL sound system, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a fixed sunroof for a more enjoyable driving experience.

Conclusion

With the launch of the Urban Cruiser BEV, Toyota is further cementing its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the electric vehicle sector. This compact yet powerful SUV offers an exciting combination of design, performance, and technology, making it a strong contender in the European EV market.
